The Suffolk County SPCA announced the arrest of a Lindenhurst man who allegedly threw his 1-year-old female Maltese dog to the ground, injuring its paw in front of a minor.

Suffolk SPCA Chief Roy Gross said that detectives have charged West Minerva Road resident Zubair Ashraf, age 39, with one count of animal cruelty and one count of endangering the welfare of a child, both misdemeanors.

It is unclear what caused Ashraf to abuse the dog. The age of the child was not released by investigators.

Ashraf was taken into custody without incident and arraigned on the charges, Gross announced on Wednesday, April 13. He was released and scheduled to appear at First District Court in Central Islip on Tuesday, April 19.

“Animal cruelty will not be tolerated in Suffolk County,” Gross stated. “If you witness any incident of animal cruelty or neglect in Suffolk County please contact the Suffolk County SPCA at (631) 382-7722.”
